Pool day for the Child Laborers

Using a bit of money generated by the ad sales on this site, we were able to take a bunch of street kids to the local pool for an afternoon. Instead of shining shoes all afternoon, we were able to treat them to a little time off.

Seven years old and working on the street

There are many “Lustradores” or shoe shine boys here in this town.

They work shining shoes. They make about an dollar an hour. I spoke to one lustrador and he said that he gives half of all the money he makes to his family. I assume other kids may give the same…if not all.

We bought some fruit. And we´re pretty sure that we got an extra piece of fruit out of the deal (aka…one of the kids stole an extra piece.)

The kids loved to be thrown in the water. Especially the bigger kids. Who were hard to throw. But Tk did a pretty good job of chucking them around.

We went to the local pool.

Showers were required before jumping in the pool. The funny thing is that the "lifeguard" (the guy that sometimes walked near the pool and worked at the gym) told TK that he had to wash off his sunblock. If he didn´t it would break the pool. Crazy huh.

We had some oreos.

Ciao!
